Kansas Forest Service hosts Walnut Council Meeting June 10
Submitted by Robert L. Atchison
The Kansas Forest Service will host the annual Walnut Council Meeting Wednesday, June 10, at the International Forest of Friendship in Atchison.
Featured tours include a 7-acre walnut plantation owned by Jerry Botts and a tour of the American Walnut Company in St. Joseph, Missouri. The American Walnut Co. processes more than 3 million board feet — the standard unit of measurement for lumber — of black walnut each year. Registration is $15 and includes refreshments, a hot lunch and educational handouts. Call 785-532-3300 or email atchison@k-state.edu.
The black walnut tree generates millions of dollars annually for Kansans through the sale and processing of the valuable logs. Read more about the tree and the council meeting.
