Registration now open for fall 2015 Osher Lifelong Learning Program in Manhattan

Kansas State University and The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kansas have teamed up to bring to the Manhattan area the diverse content, innovative learning opportunities and quality faculty that promote lifelong learning in the community. The program in Manhattan is coordinated by UFM Community Learning Center.

The Osher Institute offers courses for participants age 50 and older that stress the joy of learning. Instructors are carefully selected for their expertise, a passion for the topic, and a love of teaching. Courses meet weekly for two hours over a three-week period and require no homework, out-of-class preparation, or testing.

Special events:

• Friday, Sept. 25: An excursion to historic Marysville and Marshall County. Our first stop will be Waterville for a 40-minute ride on the Union Pacific Central Branch Railroad, one of the oldest routes in Kansas, followed by lunch at the century-old Weaver Hotel and a tour of the Waterville Opera House. Then it's on to Blue Rapids, and then a visit to Marysville and its Pony Express Museum and the Koester House Museum and Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A $65 fee includes coach transportation, admissions, and lunch. Registration deadline is Sept. 15.

• Friday, Nov. 13: Kansas State Capitol Tours and Brown v. Board of Education site. After a $300-million, 13-year renovation, the Kansas Statehouse has recaptured its historic beauty and grandeur, and stands ready to host the Osher Institute. We’ll also have lunch catered in the capitol, then tour the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic site. A $50 fee includes coach transportation, admissions, and lunch. Registration deadline is Nov. 6.

• The Heritage of Kansas Workers: Homesteaders, Miners, Farmers and More . Instructors: Greg Stephens, Tom Fleming, Debi Aaron, Dee Boyd, and Bob Storer. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 16, 23 and 30.

• The Romance of the Old Trade Routes. Instructor: Charlotte Kennedy. 2-4 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 and 8.

• The Vietnam War. Instructor: Robert Smith. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 and 13.

• Why Hitchcock Matters. Instructor: Eric Monder. 2-4 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 5, 12 and 19.

• The Farmer's Iron Horse: Railroads and Agricultural Extension in the 20th century American West. Instructor: David Vail. 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29.

• Kansas Cowtowns. Instructor: Roy Bird. 2-4 p.m, Tuesdays, Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3.

• Improvisation — Say "YES and...!" Instructor: Sally Bailey. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 2, 9 and 16.
