Remembering Sept. 11: Campus groups offering service projects, all-day memorial
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
In honor of victims, survivors, first responders and all the volunteers who stepped up after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, two Kansas State University programs will offer a weekend of service and remembrance.
HandsOn Kansas State and the Union Program Council are teaming up to host the events. Service projects will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, with a celebration to follow from 5-9 p.m. in Aggieville's Triangle Park.
Volunteers will serve at local organizations, including Habitat ReStore, Flint Hills Breadbasket, Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Stoneybrook Retirement Community and Ogden House of Hope.
"Service at these sites will vary from painting, sorting food, cleaning, organizing and preparing for the fall season," said Jackie Baker with HandsOn Kansas State and a senior in mass communications, Plano, Texas. "We want to provide the community and campus the opportunity to remember the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks."
HandsOn Kansas State and the Union Program Council will also sponsor an all-day memorial program Sunday, Sept. 11, at Bosco Plaza in front of the K-State Student Union. The program will include student, community members and veterans as speakers, vocal performances, a presentation of the colors and a dedication to local and national heroes.
Volunteers can sign up to serve at http://www.handson.k-state.edu. For further questions, contact HandsOn Kansas State at 785-532-3670 or handson@k-state.edu.
