Spring into culture: March offers music, dance, theater and art events for all

Art, music, dance and theatrical performances will take center stage at several Kansas State University cultural events in March.
The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by K-State's McCain Performance Series, department of music, dance program and Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* Art Faculty Biennial, an exhibition of the creative work of the university's department of art faculty, is on display through March 16 at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
* "Earl Iversen: Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Arts" is on display through May 20 at the Beach Museum of Art. Gain a new perspective of the Kansas landscape, natural and built, through the lens of Iversen's camera.
* "Tallgrass TV: Sam Easterson's Tribute to the Konza Prairie" runs through June 10 at the Beach Museum of Art. The exhibition includes a variety of animal-borne imaging videos to show an animal's perspective on the world. The exhibition also features still photos and taxidermy displays.
* K-State's Double Reed Ensemble and Oboe Studio of Nora Lewis, assistant professor of music, will perform a recital at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in All Faiths Chapel.
* Faculty artist Paul Hunt, professor of music, will present a solo trombone recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in All Faiths Chapel.
* As part of the McCain Performance Series, Aquila Theatre will present its rendition of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $13-$32 plus applicable taxes and fees. Drop by the McCain Auditorium box office to get tickets or call 785-532-6428. * The K-State student chapter of the Percussive Arts Society will present a Solo and Small Ensemble Workshop all day Saturday, March 3, in 201 and 204 McCain. The workshop will offer lessons and/or workshops to any high school or middle school percussionist or percussion ensemble wishing to take advantage of them. Cost is $7 per solo and $15 per ensemble. * The film "Until the End of the World" (1991) will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Beach Museum of Art. The film, directed by Wim Wenders, depicts a vision of the near future starring William Hurt, Solveig Dommartin, Sam Neill and Max Von Sydow. "Until the End of the World" includes one of the most celebrated film scores of the 20th century, with music by U2, Brian Eno, Lou Reed, Patty Smith, Talking Heads, REM, Bad Seeds and more. The event is sponsored by the Beach Museum of Art and presented with Movies on the Grass. Bluestem Bistro will have refreshments available for purchase at the showing. This film is rated R.
* Students from the voice, keyboard, string, brass, woodwind and percussion divisions will present a General Student Recital at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The Beach Museum of Art will host a lecture, "Supermodernity, Emergence and the Built Environment: Reinterpreting the Human-Made Landscape," by K-State's Dylan Beck, assistant professor of art, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6.
* The K-State Orchestra, directed by David Littrell, distinguished professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in McCain Auditorium. The concert's repertoire will include William Grant Still's "Afro-American Symphony" and the "Organ Symphony" by Camille Saint-Saens. The concert will open with the first movement of the Koussevitzky "Concerto for Double Bass" performed by Bobby Scharmann, senior in applied music, Manhattan, winner of the orchestra's concerto contest.
* "Meet the Art: Carol Haerer" will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the Beach Museum. Come learn more about Haerer's career as an artist and her painting "Lucine" at this free program for adults.
* A lecture by Robert Storr, international curator, professor of painting/printmaking and dean at Yale University School of Art, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in 114 Willard Hall.
* Guest artists Eva Amsler, flute, and Shalev Ad-El, harpsichord, will perform a recital at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in All Faiths Chapel. Amsler is professor of flute at Florida State University, and Ad-El is one of Europe's most sought-after continuo players. He has recorded more than 70 albums for labels such as Chandos, Denon and more.
* K-State Opera Theatre will present "The Crucible" at 7:30 p.m. March 8-10, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee March 11. All performances will be in Nichols Theater. Tickets cost $10-$16 and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays or at the Little Theater box office in the K-State Student Union, Wednesday through Friday. * K-State will welcome tuba and bassoon students from across the region to the "Tubaphonium Festival and Bassoon Afternoon" all day Saturday, March 10. All events take place in McCain classrooms and in McCain Auditorium.
* Pianist Jim Brickman will perform "The Romanza Tour" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11, in McCain Auditorium. A McCain Performance Series event, tickets cost $17-$55, plus applicable taxes and fees. They can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office or by calling 785-532-6428. Tickets also can be purchased online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain.
* K-State's University Band, conducted by Frank Tracz, professor of music, and the K-State Concert Band, conducted by Don Linn, instructor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, in McCain Auditorium.
* Guest violinist Madeleine Mitchell will perform a recital with K-State pianist Slawomir Dobrzanski, associate professor of music, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, in All Faiths Chapel. Mitchell has performed in more than 40 countries and at major venues as a soloist. She is the founder of the Red Violin Festival, under Lord Yehudi Menuhin's patronage, which was the first international eclectic festival of the fiddle across the arts.
* The K-State Wind Ensemble, directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in McCain Auditorium.
* "Artist Talk: Mike McMann" will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the Beach Museum. McMann, assistant professor of digital art at K-State, will explore some contemporary artists using emerging technology in their art practice.
* The K-State Jazz Bands, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.
* The K-State Jazz Combos, also directed by Wayne Goins, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in Union Station.
* Mezzo soprano Patricia Thompson, assistant professor of music, will perform a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in All Faiths Chapel.
* "Tallgrass TV: Tuning in to Nature" is a gallery talk by artist Sam Easterson at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Beach Museum. The discussion will explore techniques and tools of contemporary naturalists. Easterson will also introduce his new museum, which uses still photos and video footage from camera trap surveys, animal-borne imaging studies and other wildlife surveillance projects to present ingenious new ways to view the natural world.
* K-State dance students will take to the stage in SpringDance 2012 at 7:30 p.m. March 30-31 in Nichols Theatre. Guest artist Nela Nieman will show a classical ballet work in the performance, and guest artist Darwana Tijan from Ghana will visit during the production to teach and perform a traditional West African dance set to an African xylophone ensemble. * Joel Sartore, National Geographic photographer, will give a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Beach Museum of Art. Go behind the scenes with Sartore as he shares his passion for global wildlife conservation. Sunset Zoo's own animal collection was recently caught through his lens. The event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Sunset Zoo and the Beach Museum of Art.
