Chapman Center for Rural Studies to host open house for first anniversary celebration Friday
Submitted by Bonnie Lynn-Sherow
It's our party and we've saved you a piece of cake!
Its hard to believe that the Chapman Center for Rural Studies made it's move to its newly refurbished space in Leasure Hall a year ago. A lot has happened this past year and we want to share our news with the university community. We will be launching our second full book publication this week titled, "Filling the Larder; Feeding our Families" by research director MJ Morgan and College of Human Ecology instructor Jane Marshall's students from 2010 and 2011. We also published two independent research papers by Chapman Center interns, in addition to dozens of new K-Rex entries on the history of lost towns in Kansas. Examples of student research and work from 2011 will be on display throughout the day in Leasure 112. To document our research over the past year, Chad Miller, a 2011 bachelor's graduate in electrical engineering, has produced a film about the Chapman Center that will also debut on Friday.
Lending a hand to the festivities, K-State President Kirk Schulz will present remarks along with the center's primary benefactor, Mark Chapman, the College of Arts and Sciences' Alumni Fellow for 2012. They will be preceded by Mary Swander, the poet laureate of Iowa who will give a reading at 3 p.m. We will also be awarding the first prize for the best student paper of the year and introducing the editorial staff of Kansas History: Journal of the Central Plains, which joined the center in January.
It's been a banner year, and we hope you can join us for the celebration as we look forward to many more things to come.
