Martin Luther King Jr. community celebrations, events
K-State's Staley School of Leadership Studies and the Manhattan community will come together Jan. 16-18 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration and Day of Service.
On Saturday, Jan. 16, a MLK Jr. community celebration will be at the Manhattan Fire Station auditorium from 2-4 p.m. Come hear and see the creative work of the finalists from the MLK Jr. Art and Writing Contest and share in the words and music of the civil rights movement. Phil S. Dixon of the Kansas Humanities Council and co-founder of the Negro Baseball Museum will serve as a speaker for this event.
The Day of Service will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, with a Prayer Breakfast at the Four Points by Sheridan. The Manhattan Town Center Mall will host the rest of the day's activities, which include volunteering around the Manhattan community. Individuals and groups are encouraged to meet at the mall for registration no later than 8:30 a.m., where they will be assigned a service site. Volunteers will serve at these sites from 9 a.m. to noon.

The MLK Jr. Holiday Mall Celebration will celebrate the vision, leadership and service of King through entertainment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18. Join in an all-day celebration through service, entertainment and community recognitions. The MLK Jr. Art and Writing Awards and the Spirit of MLK Jr. Community Service Award recognition will take place at noon.
