Guest lecture to highlight Shakespeare's use of music in his plays

Submitted by David Wood

Shakespeare's Songbook

As part of the monthlong celebration surrounding the Folger Shakespeare Library's "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare" exhibition at the Beach Museum of Art, the K-State School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will host renowned musicologist, Ross Duffin of Case Western Reserve University.

Duffin will present a lively public lecture on his award-winning text, "Shakespeare's Songbook" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, in McCain Auditorium's Kirmser Hall. The songbook is a meticulously researched collection of 155 songs that appear in, are quoted in, or alluded to in Shakespeare's plays. Drawing substantially on the unmatched resources of the Folger Shakespeare Library, Duffin brings complete lyrics — many newly recovered — and music notation together for the first time, and in the process sheds new light on Shakespeare's dramatic art.
