Earth Day Week 2016: Spring cleaning and moving out are great times to donate and recycle items you no longer need

Submitted by Nick Lander

Whether you are just doing some spring cleaning or moving out of your residence hall, apartment or house, it is a great time to dispose of items you no longer want or need. But before you just toss those items in the trash, consider if they can be recycled or used by someone else.

Furniture for example, can be donated to various community organizations or can be given away through the Furniture Amnesty Day on Friday, May 6. Items can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Baker Field parking lot at City Park. Furniture can then be picked up for free by other community members from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. at the same location.

Clothing items, school supplies, books, canned food and other reusable products can be donated to community organizations as well. Be on the lookout around campus for more information about donating items.

For students living on campus in the residence halls or Jardine Apartments, there will be locations to donate various items during closing and move out. Please make sure to place trash in the trash only containers and place items that can be recycled in the recycling containers. Look for signage to be sure you are putting items in the correct place.

Larger electronic items such as televisions that no longer work should be disposed of through proper channels due to lead content in the glass.

The K-State Recycling Center also accepts some items including magazines, books, newspaper, wooden pallets and e-waste such as computers and printers. The center also provides a list of community resources with recommendations for various types of items that need to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
