Culture is in full bloom: K-State offers several art, theater, dance events in April

From art exhibitions to dance, theater and musical performances, Kansas State University has several cultural events to offer throughout April.

The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by K-State's McCain Performance Series, department of music, dance program and Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:

* "Earl Iversen: Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist" is on display through May 20 at the Beach Museum of Art. Come gain a new perspective of the Kansas landscape, natural and built, through the lens of Iversen's camera.

* "Tallgrass TV: Sam Easterson's Tribute to the Konza Prairie" runs through June 10 at the Beach Museum of Art. The exhibition includes a variety of animal-borne imaging videos to show an animal's perspective on the world. The exhibition also features still photos and taxidermy displays.

* The flute studio of Karen McLaughlin Large, assistant professor of music, will perform a recital at 5:45 p.m. Monday, April 2, in All Faiths Chapel.

* "Art21: Change" will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in 114 Willard Hall Room. The Beach Museum of Art and the K-State department of art are hosts. View the "Art21" season six episode "Change" featuring artists Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui and Catherine Opie. Art21 Access '12 is a global campaign providing access to contemporary art and artists through hundreds of public screenings and events celebrating the premiere of season six of the Peabody Award-winning television series, "Art in the Twenty-First Century."

* The K-State Percussion Ensemble, directed by Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in McCain Auditorium.

* ARTSmart Classes for Children, Grazing the Grasslands, will be April 3-6 at the Beach Museum of Art. Monthly themes for the classes are taken from the exhibition "Tallgrass TV," a video installation by artist Sam Easterson celebrating the Konza Prairie.

* Movies on the Grass and the Beach Museum of Art will present screenings of two short films, "Proteus" and "West Bank Story," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the museum. Yuval Ron, the composer for both films' original scores, will be on hand to answer questions after the screenings.

* The tuba and euphonium studio of Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The bassoon studio of Susan Maxwell, instructor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The Yuval Ron Ensemble will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in McCain Auditorium. Led by Oscar-winning composer Ron, the ensemble includes Muslim, Jewish and Christian artists who unite the sacred musical traditions of Judaism, Sufism -- the Islamic mystical tradition -- and the Christian Armenian Church, creating an inspirational musical and dance celebration. The concert is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. To reserve tickets or for additional information, please visit the McCain Auditorium box office or call 785-532-6428.

* The K-State dance program's 2012 Senior Recital, "Timeless," will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Wareham Opera House, 410 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan. The recital will feature a wide variety of dance genres, including ballet, musical theater and modern. Student, alumni and faculty choreography will be represented at the event. Event organizers include K-State's Michelle Thomas, senior in theater, Gardner, and Eryka Stabel, senior in theater, Lakin. A reception will follow the performance.

* Guest pianist Alex Peh will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in All Faiths Chapel. Peh is on faculty at the Levine School of Music, a community music school in Washington, D.C

* The Beach Museum of Art will host Calligraphy Night for Adults at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12. Join your friends for dessert while you learn and practice the art of calligraphy. Admission is $10 per person and reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling 785-532-7718

* The department of music's annual Honors Recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, in All Faiths Chapel. The Honors Recital features top students from K-State's voice, wind, string, percussion and keyboard divisions competing for scholarships. The evening also awards many departmental honors, including naming the Presser Undergraduate Scholar, a national award that includes a substantial cash prize.

* The percussion studio of Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a recital at 5:45 p.m. Monday, April 16, in All Faiths Chapel.

* "Sticks and Strings," the collaborative recital of string and percussion students, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The exhibition "Quiet Symmetry: The Ceramic Art of Yoshiro Ikeda" opens Tuesday, April 17, and runs through Sept. 2 at the Beach Museum of Art. The exhibition features work by Ikeda, master ceramist and university distinguished professor of art.

* The K-State Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, directed by Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, and K-State Clarinet Ensemble, directed by Tod Kerstetter, associate professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The K-State Brass Ensemble, conducted by Andy Feyes, doctoral student in curriculum and instruction, Manhattan, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in McCain Auditorium.

* The annual Music Memory Contest for elementary school students will take place at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 19, in McCain Auditorium. The Music Memory program, which brings listening lessons to thousands of students in the state, has grown from two teams to 33 teams over the past nine years.

* General Student Recital, featuring students from vocal, wind, percussion, string and keyboard divisions, will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The K-State Orchestra will present its final concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in McCain Auditorium. Concerto Contest winner Jenny Good, senior in music education, Topeka, will perform Hue's "Fantasie" for flute and orchestra, as conducted by Blair Williams, master's student in music, Peabody. David Littrell, distinguished professor of music, will conduct Edward MacDowell's First Suite "In an Enchanted Forest." Julie Pentz, associate professor of dance, has choreographed the entire "Symphony No. 7" by Beethoven to conclude the program.

* Early Release Day Clay Workshop, ages 6 and up, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Beach Museum. Participants will view the works of K-State's Yoshira Ikeda, master ceramist and distinguished professor of art, and create their own textured ceramic work with air-dry clay. Cost is $5 per child or $2.50 for Beach Museum members.

* The K-State Singers, directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music, will perform its spring show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in McCain Auditorium. A small admission fee will be charged.

 * The Beach Museum of Art will celebrate the retirement of K-State's Yoshira Ikeda, master ceramist and distinguished professor of art, from 10 a.m. to noon as part of the All University Open House, Saturday, April 21. Come celebrate Ikeda's career with family-style art activities, including a quest through the special exhibition with prizes.

* The annual end-of-the-year Tap Ensemble Showcase will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Leavenworth St., Manhattan.

* The K-State Collegiate Chorale, directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music, will perform a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The K-State Jazz Bands, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.

* The St. George Elementary Honor Choir will perform a guest concert at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, in All Faiths Chapel. The choir is directed by Janet Armstead, who is in her 17th year of teaching at St. George.

* As part of the 2011-2012 McCain Performance Series, Pilobolus Dance Theatre will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at McCain Auditorium. A highly unusual dance company, Pilobolus is creative, expressive and athletic. The group is known for its humor, stunning imagery and acrobatic skill. * The K-State Jazz Combos, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Union Station.

* Guest organist Brian Mathias will perform an Organ Music for a Wednesday Morning concert at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, in All Faiths Chapel. Mathias is a graduate teaching assistant pursuing a doctorate of musical arts at the University of Kansas. He also has recently been named an adjunct instructor of organ at Washburn University.

* The K-State University Band, directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music, and the K-State Concert Band directed by Don Linn, instructor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in McCain Auditorium.

* "Art 21: Boundaries" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Beach Museum. View the "Art21" season six episode "Boundaries" featuring artists David Altmejd, assume vivid astro focus, Lynda Benglis and Tabaimo. K-State's Bill North, senior curator of the Beach Museum of Art, will also lead a discussion about Bengils, who has work in the museum's collection.

* K-State's early music ensemble, the Collegium Musicum, directed by Thomas Bell, faculty and graduate services librarian, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The K-State Wind Ensemble, directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music, will be joined by the Seaman High School Symphonic Band, Topeka, for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in McCain Auditorium.

* The K-State Flute Ensemble, directed by Karen McLaughlin Large, assistant professor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, in 204 McCain.

* Pianist Slawomir Dobrzanski, associate professor of music, will perform as part of the Hale Recital Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library. * In-A-Chord, K-State's a capella vocal ensemble, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door or $5 in advance. Contact the music department for more information.

* The K-State Men's and Women's Choirs, directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music, will perform a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in All Faiths Chapel.

* "The Sleeping Beauty" will be performed by the Moscow Festival Ballet at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in McCain Auditorium. The Moscow Festival Ballet will present lavish sets, beautiful costumes, gifted principal dancers and a corps de ballet. * K-State's Slawomir Dobrzanski, associate professor of music, will present his piano students in a recital at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Manhattan, 481 Zeandale Road, Manhattan

* The Theory Class Composition Recital will take place at 5:45 p.m. Monday, April 30, in All Faiths Chapel. This recital features the best compositions from the theory classes this semester

* The Faculty Brass Quintet will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 30, in All Faiths Chapel. Quintet members include Craig Parker, associate professor of music, trumpet; James Johnson, master's student in music, Belle Vernon, Pa., trumpet; Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, associate professor of music, French horn; Paul Hunt, professor of music, trombone; and Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, tuba.
