Poet and fiction writer to read from their work on Friday, Oct. 7

Submitted by Karin Westman

On Friday, Oct. 7, poet Karen Leona Anderson and fiction writer Jerry Gabriel will read from their work at 3:30 p.m. in the K-State Student Union's Little Theatre.

Anderson is the author of two poetry collections, "Receipt," Milkweed Editions, 2016, and "Punish Honey," Carolina Wren Press, 2009, which won the Carolina Wren Press Poetry Series Prize. She teaches at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Gabriel's first book of short fiction, "Drowned Boy," Sarabande Books, won several awards: the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, the Barnes and Noble "Discover Great New Writers" selection, and the 2011 Towson Prize for Literature. His second book, "The Let Go," Queen’s Ferry Press, was published in 2015. He also teaches at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Both Anderson and Gabriel are graduates of the Iowa Writers' Workshop Master of Fine Arts program. Anderson also has a master's degree from Victoria University in New Zealand and a doctorate from Cornell University.

Dan Hoyt, associate professor in creative writing, is looking forward to the award-winning writing that Anderson and Gabriel will share and to their joint appearance.

"This is going to be a truly unique reading because we have a married couple, both writers, who will split time at the podium," Hoyt explained. "It will give students real insight into how people balance careers, art, parenthood, and the need for the time to write."

The reading is sponsored by the English department. A book-signing will follow the reading.
