Alonso Peña and Evelyn Lucio honored for contributions to social justice
Undergraduate students Alonso Peña and Evelyn Lucio were recently awarded the Joey Lee Garmon Undergraduate Multicultural Student Scholarship for their contributions to social justice. Peña and Lucio were honored at the beginning of the Lou Douglas Lecture Oct. 11 by Tim Wise.
Currently working toward degrees in American ethnic studies, both Peña and Lucio plan to use skills honed in their academic studies to advance social justice.
The scholarship was named, in tribute, for an African-American male student unable to find the support to overcome racial harassment in educational and social settings. This honor is awarded to K-State students demonstrating academic and leadership achievements that help create justice for all.
