In the world of emergency communications, the 911 communications officers are some of the most valuable assets a community has.
The Kansas State University Police Department has a team of 11. The team works in the police department’s communications center in Edwards Hall and is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The center is the central hub for public safety on campus.
The team of six full-time and five student operators are all nationally certified and go through recertification and testing to maintain their proficiency.
“Our team of dispatchers holds a great responsibility in their positions,” said Doran Herbel, the supervisor of the center.
In most cases, two dispatchers are on duty each shift to ensure when an emergency occurs the staff is able to effectively manage the emergency. One of the highlights of the center is the team approach.
“When an emergency happens is when our dispatchers truly shine, their professionalism and character is consistently at a high level,” Herbel said.
The center also serves as a backup emergency communications center for Riley County, which allows for interoperability if there is a need.
“This week marks a weeklong appreciation for their extraordinary efforts throughout the year,” said Ronnie Grice, assistant vice president for public safety.
