Call for projects for video-professional writing partnership
Through a collaboration between the English department and the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Professor Han Yu and Assistant Professor Tom Hallaq are looking for K-State researchers to be clients for class projects for the fall 2017 semester.
For the past two years, the Office of the Vice President for Research has identified National Science Foundation-funded researchers as clients for video production and professional writing classes. This year Hallaq and Yu are looking to expand collaboration between their classes, providing a broader range of clients for their students.
Clients will receive video production and professional writing services from students who create a polished video, news releases, social media posts or other written materials about the research, facility or group. Clients should be willing to work with students and have one person serve as a main point of contact. That person should expect to spend an average of one hour per week with students from the class, with the commitment likely to be heavier in the early part of the semester and near the end of the semester during the video editing process. Clients are asked to pay $300 to defray video production costs. Clients also are responsible for additional expenses including travel or video storage such as hard drives if transfer of raw footage is required.
Students in MC471 and ENGL510 and their clients have benefited from these real-world projects. Final videos have been distributed through National Science Foundation's Science 360 News Service, and some efforts have won national and regional awards.
Individual researchers, centers or institutes, student organizations, or departments are welcome to apply. Clients may distribute final written pieces and videos as they see fit.
Prospective clients should express interest by emailing Sarah Hancock at sarhan@k-state.edu.
