Weapons policy training module available
On July 1, the university's exemption from the concealed carry requirements of the Personal and Family Protection Act expires, meaning that the concealed carry of handguns will be allowed in university buildings at Kansas State University and other state universities. K-State continues its commitment to the safety of students, faculty and staff and all members of the K-State community.
Over the past year and a half, the Weapons Advisory Work Group has worked closely with individuals across campus to prepare for the new requirement that concealed carry be allowed in our buildings. The revised University Weapons Policy, PPM Chapter 3770, has been approved by the Board of Regents. Additionally, the board has approved the areas in which the university may employ temporary adequate security measures in order to restrict concealed carry at certain events. Most recently, the work group collaborated with Shanna Legleiter and Sam Roberts of Human Capital Services' Learning and Development to develop an online weapons policy education module. The module is open to all members of the university community, including students, faculty, staff and visitors. The education module covers key aspects of the changes within the weapons policy, shares available resources and answers some commonly asked questions. All members of the university community are strongly encouraged to review the module and the information provided on the weapons policy webpage.
As the expiration date of the exemption for university buildings quickly approaches, it is important to remember that the open carry of handguns continues to be prohibited on grounds and buildings of K-State campuses. No locations have been designated as prohibiting concealed carry with permanent adequate security measures. The Kansas Board of Regents Governance Committee approved the university's request to provide temporary adequate security measures for football games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and men's and women's basketball games hosted in Bramlage Coliseum. Additionally, the university may authorize temporary adequate security measures on an event-by-event basis in McCain Auditorium, Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
Many individuals and groups on campus have provided helpful input as we take steps to comply with this state law and Board of Regents policy. We appreciate all the comments and discussion on this issue. We also appreciate the work Shanna and Sam have done in completing the education module. Please don't hesitate to reach out to members of the work group or campus police for any questions you may have on this issue.
