Michael Bear joined Kansas State University as emergency management coordinator on May 1.
The emergency management coordinator organizes the review and revision of the university's emergency management plan. Bear will work with colleges and departments to update their internal plans and procedures to ensure they support the plan.
The position, previously housed in the environmental heath and safety department, is now under the K-State Police Department.
As emergency management coordinator, Bear also will develop and coordinate exercises to test the emergency management plan. In the case of an emergency on campus, Bear will manage the university's response efforts and serve as a liaison to the Riley County Emergency Management Department.
Before joining K-State, Bear was the director of preparedness at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment where he managed federal grant programs to ensure health care preparedness throughout Kansas.
Bear also previously served as the radiological branch chief at the Ohio Emergency Management Agency for five years, and was part of the Ohio Department of Health's Bureau of Radiation Protection.
In addition to his experience in the government sector, Bear has worked in the fields of publishing, toxicology and nuclear air filtration.
Bear's office is at Edwards Hall. He can be reached at mlbear@k-state.edu or 785-532-6412.
