Walter Dodds, university distinguished professor in the Division of Biology, is the 2017 recipient of the Society for Freshwater Science Award of Excellence.
As the society's top research award, it is presented to one ecologist a year who has shown outstanding contributions to freshwater ecological science.
Dodds has published more than 160 peer-reviewed publications about nutrient cycling, trophic state and nutrients levels in streams and other aquatic environments, management of stream nutrients and establishing a baseline for predicting characteristics of streams across biome gradients. Since he started at Kansas State University in 1990, he has mentored 28 undergraduates, 11 master's degree students, 10 doctoral students and eight postdoctoral researchers.
Dodds is active in several large-scale collaborative projects such as the National Ecological Observatory Network aquatic site design for streams and the Scale Consumers and Lotic Ecosystem Rates project. He also contributed to the Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment I and II projects.
