Save the date: Feeding the Future event Feb. 3
On Feb. 3, 2018, K-State's grain science and industry department will host a day of discovery for students interested in exploring the world of grains and how they can be a path toward a fulfilling career.
The Grain Science Day: Feeding the Future career discovery event is intended to be a fun day of hands-on activities that demonstrate various aspects of milling grain into flour, baking a variety of confections and cake products, and production of animal foods for pets and livestock. The event will offer prospective students an opportunity to experience a wide variety of grain food topics in an engaging and fun environment. The efforts will be led by current K-State students in grain science along with aid from faculty and staff.
"This is a good way for students looking for a unique major that results in understanding things that they enjoy eating," said Gordon Smith, head of the grain science and industry department.
After creating a number of grain-based foods in the labs, the students will tour the larger scale production facilities.
At the culmination of the day, students also will be part of judging competitions to critique commercial product quality and to score the creativity of their cohorts. There will also be an awards ceremony and ice cream social. Faculty, staff and students will be available to visit about majors, courses, scholarships and general campus life.
"I wish this event had been available when I was in high school; it would have saved me a lot of time searching through different majors," said Parker McGuire, senior in milling science and management.
For additional information and to register for the event, students, parents and guidance counselors are encouraged to contact Brenda Heptig at bheptig@k-state.edu or 785-532-4051.
