Haar's Dye Garden Sampler earns quilt show honors
Sherry Haar, associate professor of apparel and textiles, received the Award of Excellence in a juried exhibition for her Dye Garden Sampler.
Work of only 39 out of 305 artists was accepted into The Artist as Quiltmaker XV exhibition running through July 29 at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts, New Union Center for the Arts gallery in Oberlin, Ohio.
Haar used 36 different plants to dye and print the fabrics in the sampler quilt. Prints were created by hammering plant leaves and flowers into the fabric. Her research focuses on designing textile art with sustainable intent. So she grows regional dye plants and uses solar and decomposition extraction methods to allow the plant to release its color over time with the sun’s heat.
