Match for merit: University, community foundation reward Kansas City area Hispanic students for academics, involvement

Kansas State University has paired with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to award 19 students with scholarships for outstanding academic merit and community involvement.
The community foundation's Hispanic Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to Hispanic students enrolled full time in an accredited college or university and working toward an associate, bachelor's or graduate degree. Students must exhibit academic merit, community involvement and a financial need. The recipients from Kansas State University receive an additional matching scholarship from the university's general scholarship fund.
"The Greater Kansas City Hispanic Scholarship fund identifies top scholarship students who are interested in pursuing a college degree," said Larry Moeder, Kansas State University assistant vice president for student life and director of admissions and student financial assistance. "Through matching scholarship opportunities, K-State hopes to attract scholars to the university."
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was created in 1985 to help students from the Greater Kansas City area fill gaps in financing their college education. The community foundation expects these scholarships to provide educational and economic opportunities for Hispanics. The Kansas State University's general scholarship fund also provides matching scholarships for several other similar programs.
"It was so wonderful to see that 19 of the more than 300 students awarded scholarships are K-Staters, and that Kansas State University supports those students with matching scholarship dollars," said Cecilia Hernandez, project coordinator in the university's office of diversity.
