Artful organizers: Local students create exhibition for university's Beach Museum of Art
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
Students from Manhattan elementary and middle schools are the curators of a special exhibition at Kansas State University's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
The Young Curators Exhibition, which runs through Sept. 2, will be featured as part of an open house at the museum from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 28. Refreshments, tours and art activities also will be available. All events are free and the public is welcome.
The young curators, part of a summer class at the museum, have been investigating aspects of light. The group includes Jenna Altamimi, a sixth-grader at Bergman Elementary School; Carly Cecil, sixth-grader at Lee Elementary School; Brogan Holdren, seventh-grader at Susan B. Anthony Middle School; and Marlena Hummel, sixth-grader at Marlatt Elementary School.
"Young Curators is a good opportunity to get into the art world and learn about amazing artists," Altamimi said.
"I joined the Young Curators' program to create exhibitions and learn at the same time," Hummel said.
Participants worked one afternoon a week during the month of June as a team to create an exhibition using works on display in the museum's permanent collection galleries. They met with members of the museum staff to learn about museum careers and took a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. The students then chose a theme and artworks, wrote opening text labels for the exhibition, created a gallery guide, wrote a press release and developed educational/art activities for an open house event.
Artworks chosen from the permanent collection for the exhibition have special labels and visitors may pick up a guide at the information desk.
