Internationally recognized entomology researcher to give seminar
Jeffery K. Tomberlin, professor and program director of the Forensic and Investigative Sciences Program, will present "Harvesting Death for Humanity's Benefit: Linking Microbial Communication With Insect Behavior" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in 231 Waters Hall.
Tomberlin is the affiliate site co-director of the National Science Foundation-National Institute of Justice's Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science. His research interests are the ecology and biology of flies associated with decomposing matter. His research is divided into two main categories: determining proper methods for suppressing fly populations associated with animal waste on confined animal facilities and understanding the biology of insects that colonize human remains in order to assist law enforcement personnel in estimating the time of colonization of a corpse in order to provide a minimum postmortem interval.
