Smart Fit Girls program open for new participants
Researchers in the food, nutrition, dietetics and health department are looking for middle school-age girls who are interested in participating in Smart Fit Girls, a 10-week after-school strength training program.
Smart Fit Girls teaches adolescent girls how to love their bodies by embracing their own strength. During the program, girls participate in exciting activities aimed at improving their self-esteem and body image, and are introduced to resistance training exercises in a fun, group environment.
The group meets twice a week for two hours at a time beginning Jan. 29. It offers two cohorts: a Tuesday/Thursday group that meets from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and is comprised of middle school-age girls only, and a Thursday/Saturday group that meets from 5:45-7:45 p.m. on Thursdays and 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays and is comprised of middle school-age girls and their mother/female caregiver. Sessions will take place on the third floor of Lafene Health Center. Data collection will include a physical fitness assessment, surveys, height, weight, waist circumference and DEXA scans for both daughters and mothers.
