Hanson has served as the Pacific Economic Cooperation Chair in International Economic Relations at the UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy since 2012 and has taught there since 2001. Hanson taught previously in the economics department at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2001 and was a faculty member in the economics department at the University of Texas, Austin from 1992 to 1998. He served as acting dean at the School of Global Policy and Strategy from 2016 to 2017, and director of the Center on Global Transformation since 2006.

The Joe Tiao Lecture Series, initiated in 2006, enables the College of Arts and Sciences' economics department to bring two internationally acclaimed economists to campus each year. Each Tiao lecturer presents two lectures at K-State: a public lecture on an economics issue of current interest and a more technical seminar in the department.
