Graduate students awarded scholarships from K-State alumna
Graduate students Jordann Brandner, Sam Fox and Yeng Xiong were awarded inaugural conference travel scholarships donated by K-State alumna Bernadette Drouhard through the Kansas State Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering, or KAWSE.
"I wanted to provide these conference travel scholarships because KAWSE and Women in Engineering/SWE provided me with similar scholarships to attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in June 2018," Drouhard said. "I hugely benefited from attending the conference two years in a row and, as a recent grad, I was eager to begin paying this forward to other K-Staters. Next year, I hope to have a portion of my donation reserved for students who attend the ational Conference for College Women Student Leaders on a full or partial scholarship, like I did, and need financial assistance to afford the plane ticket to Washington, D.C."
Brandner and Fox previously created and facilitated sessions for KAWSE's GROW workshops, which are hands-on STEM workshops for middle school students hosted two Saturdays during the academic year and one three-day summer camp in June. The third recipient, Xiong, was very involved with outreach in the KAWSE Ambassadors Student Organization, which developed a program to travel to area high schools to encourage historically underrepresented groups to pursue STEM fields, hopefully at K-State.
