Division of Biology seminar speaker to present 'Replication Ethics'
Submitted by Division of Biology
Scott Tanona, associate professor of philosophy at Kansas State University, will deliver a seminar in the Division of Biology titled"Replication Ethics" at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10 in 221 Ackert Hall.
Tanona specializes in the philosophy of science, with a particular interest in issues surrounding reproducibility. Reproducibility is a supposed hallmark of science but is elusive in practice.
Tanona will discuss his National Science Foundation's funded investigation into attitudes about the responsible conduct of research and their relationship to scientists' understanding of the aims of science. This work addresses fundamental questions, like "What should we make of failures to replicate?" and "Should the scientific community be doing more to try systematically to replicate results?" He will provide a framework for thinking about ethics in science in relation to various goals of science. He will also discuss different explanations for replication failures and will explore responsibilities of the scientific community in light of some of those goals.
