Reinstating 2021 annual performance reviews for unclassified and USS
Submitted by Employee Relations and Engagement
On July 17, 2020, Human Capital Services announced in K-State Today that the university allowed flexibility for mid-year and annual reviews of USS and unclassified professional staff. At that time, many departments and their employees across the university experienced unprecedented professional and personal challenges caused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The flexibility for mid-year and annual reviews allowed departments time to address changes in daily critical tasks or expectations, working from home and dealing with "safer at home" orders, limited technology resources and quarantine and/or isolation orders. Additionally, some employees were on administrative leave and/or furloughed further adding to the challenges departments faced as they had to shift critical tasks to other members of their team. During that time, Human Capital Services continued to encourage supervisors to be flexible, approachable, and to check in with their employees regularly as departments were diligently assessing and reassessing how to adjust work demands to employee needs.
In the new year the university continues to operate in Phase 3 of the reopening plan. Human Capital Services feels confident that supervisors have made the necessary adjustments within their department to meet both the needs of their employees while accomplishing their unit's mission. Therefore, now is a great time for our supervisors to be intentional in outlining 2021 expectations for employees, goal setting and allowing opportunity for open dialogue about opportunities for development. All requirements and processes for annual performance reviews for calendar year 2021 and beyond should be implemented moving forward.
