Vernon Larson International Lecture: 'Symbolism in Bharatanatyam, a Classical Indian Dance'

Jui Mhatre will present “Symbolism in Bharatanatyam, a Classical Indian Dance” on Thursday, March 14.
All Vernon Larson Lectures take place from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Ballroom, 17th and Anderson Avenue. There is an optional lunch for $15 per individual served at 11:30 a.m. with the free presentation beginning at 12:15 pm.
Mhatre has been practicing classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam for past 15 years, and teaching classical as well as folk dances for 10 years. She received her formal training in dance in Mumbai, India. Before coming to United States she taught dance in Mumbai and also performed professionally. She has appeared in several solo performances in United States and Canada.
Mhatre has a Bachelor of Fine Art. As an interdisciplinary artist, she mixes dance practice with elements of design, and other media such as clay and video. Investigating the interrelation and exploring the cultural contradictions between diverse art forms have been dominant themes in her interdisciplinary work. Currently, she offers classes in Indian classical and folk dances at UFM Community Learning Center in Manhattan.
