Showcase highlights engineering undergraduate research activities
The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering hosted its virtual Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Showcase in April. Participants submitted their abstract, digital poster and three-minute recorded video explaining their poster and research activity. Industry representatives served as virtual judges. All engineering departments were represented in the showcase.
Winning entries were as follows:
First place — Ashton Gohman, junior in chemical engineering, "Spatiotemporal Dynamic Modeling of Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cells"; research advisor, Davood Pourkargar, assistant professor, chemical engineering.
Second place — Elizabeth Seidl, junior in biological and agricultural engineering, "Phytic Acid: A Plant-based Purification Strategy"; research advisor, Lisa Wilken, associate professor, biological and agricultural engineering.
Third place — Carlos Espino-Mendez, junior in architectural engineering and construction science, "Performance of a Refrigeration System Using R-134a Alternative Refrigerants"; research advisor, Melanie Derby, associate professor, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
