Clyde Freeman Herreid to present Division of Biology Seminar
Submitted by Division of Biology
Clyde Herreid, distinguished teaching professor emeritus at the University of Buffalo, will present "What is Your Legacy? A Journey Through the Academy to Find the Answers" as part of the Division of Biology Seminar Series at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, via Zoom.
Abstract: My journey began 60 years ago, graduating from Johns Hopkins and Penn State as a fresh Ph.D. and heading to the Marine Biological Laboratory in Miami for a postdoc. Six months later I was driving 6,000 miles to the University of Alaska in the dead of winter for my first job. Soon I was off for another postdoc at Duke and then to a career at the University at Buffalo for 53 years. This is my story through the academic world of research, teaching and service, with the question was it worth it? On the way I published 150 papers, six books, taught 25,000 students, established a university Honors College, and created the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science which services literally millions of students. Which, if any of these has made a difference? A question to consider any time but especially in the twilight of a career. Certainly, the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science seems a winner, using stories to teach science. But, what is a case study and why does it seem more effective than lecture? If it is so good, why don't we use this method all of the time?
