Primary texts Swogger Scholarship spring 2022
Apply for a Swogger Scholarship for spring 2022. Multiple scholarships will be awarded. Please note that primary texts research and primary texts related to travel, such as study abroad, can be supported by the Swogger Scholarship.
This $1,000 scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. Glenn and Mrs. Claire Swogger whose Redbud Foundation is a major supporter of K-State’s primary texts certificate program. The Swoggers’ commitment to primary texts education at K-State has made possible the program’s core course, DAS 300: Primary Texts Core Course, and many other benefits, including the possibility of promoting primary texts programs to other institutions of higher education. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote undergraduate research and engagement using primary texts. The program will help students with the goal of presenting and potentially publishing any work that results from the scholarship.
To apply for this scholarship, a student must be enrolled in the primary texts certificate program. Students who obtain the scholarship will either 1) plan to enroll in a class at home or abroad, including in-person and online classes at K-State and elsewhere, in which they will be studying primary texts, or 2) develop a written work they have already undertaken for potential presentation or publication under the supervision of Laurie Johnson, director of the primary texts certificate program. The revision should entail a significant use of primary texts. Students who do not have a paper already composed can still apply by submitting a proposal for a paper they would like to write.
Students seeking option 1 should show that they are eligible to take the course or other educational experience and are preferably already enrolled. For option 2, students should briefly describe the paper or other work they wish to develop in a cover letter. They should include a proposed deadline for completing any written work, and any ideas they have for publication/presentation, including submitting to K-State's Live Ideas undergraduate journal. All applicants should submit an academic transcript and a resume.
Subsequent development of written work will take place under the guidance of the program director within the confines of one semester. Receiving academic credit for this work is an option. Scholarship papers can be subsequently used to fulfill the capstone requirement for the program. Students seeking a scholarship are encouraged to contact Johnson before applying if they have any questions. Email all materials to lauriej@k-state.edu.
The application deadline for the Swogger Scholarship is Friday, Feb. 25. Email application, including all required materials, to Johnson.
