Weekly global religious, spiritual and nonreligious observance information
The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for Feb. 14-Feb. 20.
Feb. 14:
• Race Relations Day — Christian, recognizing the importance of interracial relations and learning. Celebration of this day varies in manner and time around the world. Some observations and events are entirely secular.
• St. Valentine's Day — Christian, Feast Day of St. Valentine, celebrating love and affection.
• National Founding Day — Scientology, marking the founding of the first Church of Scientology in the U.S., Los Angeles 1954.
Feb. 15: Nirvana Day — Buddhist, also known as Parinirvana Day, remembering the enlightenment of Buddha; Nirvana is the festival that marks the end of an endless cycle of birth and rebirth of misery. When the Buddha reached Nirvana, he finally escaped the cycle. By emulating the Buddha’s practices, the faithful may also hope to reach enlightenment too. In addition to trips to temples and celebrations there, followers take the opportunity for introspection on how to live life better.
The President's Committee on Religious, Spiritual and Nonreligious Diversity welcomes those of all global religious, spiritual and nonreligious commitments. Further, we welcome any suggestions, questions or other comments. Please contact the chair, Bev Earles, at earles@k-state.edu.
