Campus invited to Thursdays@3 lab tour series kickoff

Submitted by Grant Guggisberg

The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering will kick off its Thursdays@3 laboratory tour series for the fall semester when it opens Ryan Hansen's biointerface lab from 3-4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, in 2042 Durland Hall.

The hourlong come-and-go event will feature a tour of the facility and demonstrations of some of the equipment available for collaborative use by the university community. The purpose of the tours is to make the K-State research community aware of the capabilities of each lab while also fostering more interdisciplinary research opportunities across the university.

Hansen, a Steve Hsu Keystone research scholar, Warren and Gisela Kennedy Keystone research scholar and associate professor of chemical engineering, will be on hand to lead the tour and share about his research interests.

Hansen's laboratory is equipped with high-resolution microscopes, novel light patterning tools, cell culture equipment and microfluidic capabilities. Hansen's research focuses on designing novel materials and interfaces for microbial biotechnologies. Using innovative approaches in polymer science, surface chemistry and microfabrication, his lab has established new methods of screening cells for unique functions, new materials for isolating cells and new materials that can protect cells in harsh environments. The applications of his research are aimed at providing sustainable solutions to food production and water treatment.

The series will continue on Oct. 27 with a tour of Placidus Amama's catalysis and nanotechnology research laboratory.
