AgFest raises $3,500 for charity
Submitted by Jordan Hildebrand
In April, students in the College of Agriculture helped to raise and donate more than $3,500 during AgFest Week to benefit Kernels 4 Kids, a charity founded by a Kansas State University graduate.
AgFest Week is an annual celebration of agriculture and the students who study it at K-State. The week includes a barbeque, Cowboy Olympics competition, dodgeball tournament, guest speaker, Kiddie Barnyard for local elementary school students and a concert. All funds raised during this week are then donated to the week’s charity of choice.
"Agriculture Student Council is passionate about agriculture and about helping others in need," said Christine Wilson, assistant dean of the College of Agriculture. "The combination of a week of events to celebrate agriculture and raising support for a philanthropy is a powerful and touching mixture."
Kernels 4 Kids was founded by Danielle Hill, a K-State graduate and agriculturist. Hill, Miss Wooded Hills 2013, founded the charity to help raise funds for the Miss America Organization’s charity partner Children’s Miracle Network. Kernels 4 Kids partners with grain elevators throughout the state and asks local farmers to donate a few bushels of their crop to the organization. The grains will then be sold to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
AgFest is an annual event sponsored by the College of Agriculture Student Council. Ag Student Council consists of representatives from organizations in the college and strives to serve the council member’s fellow students.
"I am very proud of our students in the College of Agriculture," Wilson said. "It is inspiring to see them celebrate their love of agriculture and lend support to children."
