Kansas Legislative Update week two

The Kansas Legislature convened Jan. 9. All statewide elected officials were sworn in at the Inaugural Ceremony at the State Capitol. Also, 125 new House of Representatives were sworn in to serve for a two-year term. 

On Jan. 10, Sen. Tom Hawk resigned his Senate seat with a final speech on the Senate floor. Newly elected Usha Reddi, Manhattan, was sworn in on Jan. 11 to complete the final two years of the Senate term.

Gov. Laura Kelly was slated to deliver the State of the State address on Jan. 11. The address was canceled and is rescheduled for Jan. 24. The governor's budget details were released on Jan. 12 to a joint meeting of the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

This week will be a short week as the Legislature will not meet on Monday in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The House Appropriations Committee will have a hearing on APRA Grants for Higher Education and Economic Development on Thursday, Jan. 19. Also on Jan. 19, the Senate Education Committee will hear from Kansas community colleges and independent colleges presenting on the state of community colleges and private colleges in Kansas.
