Preparation is key to safety
It is recommended that families have a plan in case of an emergency and practice it at least twice a year. Plans should take the physical capabilities of family members in mind, including children and older adults.
When planning for a potential emergency, the basics of survival are important. Consider the following items when creating an emergency preparedness kit:
- Water: One gallon per person, per day for at least three days
- Enough nonperishable food, for at least three days, and can opener
- Battery-powered radio
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Tool kit
- Moist towelettes and garbage bags for sanitation
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape
- Cellphone and portable charger
