The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for Nov. 20 to Nov. 26.
American Thanksgiving — Thursday, Nov. 23. Tradition: American civil religion.
International Buy Nothing Day — Thursday, Nov. 23. Tradition: World Pantheist Movement. Day on which withdrawal from consumerism encourages spiritual reflection.
Martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji — Friday, Nov. 24. Tradition: Sikhism. This day commemorates the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, 1621-1675, the ninth of the 10 Sikh Gurus. He is remembered not only for his defense of the Sikh faith, but also of Hinduism and of religious liberty.
Day of the Covenant — Saturday, Nov. 25. Tradition: Baha'i. Celebrates the anniversary of the appointment of 'Abdu'l-Baha, the son of Baha'u'llah, as the Center of the Covenant. Work is not suspended on this day. Begins at sundown.
Guru Nanak's birthday — Sunday, Nov. 26. Tradition: Sikhism.
Nativity Fast — Thursday, Nov. 15-Sunday, Dec. 24. Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox. Period of ascetic discipline in preparation for the celebration of Christmas, the Feast of the Nativity.
American Indian/Indigenous Heritage Month — Nov. 1 to Nov. 30.
