College of Business Administration Edgerley Family Dean Kevin Gwinner recently announced the college's faculty and staff award winners for fall 2023, as recommended by the college's Recognition and Awards Committee.
The recipient of the College of Business Administration Teaching Excellence Award is Tareque Nasser, associate professor of finance. According to the committee, "The nominations for Dr. Nasser really spoke to the value that he brings to students in his classes. Over the past 10 years, he has been responsible for teaching eight different rigorous and challenging finance courses. While they are challenging, student feedback from reviews and personal communications all speak to the emphasis Dr. Nasser places on student success. Empathy, engagement, authenticity, expertise, and preparation sum up his approach toward teaching. Even when engaging with students that are not in one of his classes, Associate Professor Nasser makes it a priority to step in and help with advising in student competitions, answering questions for potential finance students, and engaging with graduating students to prepare them for their careers in the world of finance. Given his consistently high TEVALS and impressive feedback from students, the committee feels confident in recommending Associate Professor Tareque Nasser for the Teaching Excellence Award."
Hansin Bilgili, assistant professor of management, is the recipient of the college's Outstanding Contributions in Research Award. "Dr. Bilgili has an impressive track record concerning his recent scholarly research and publications. In the past two years alone, Assistant Professor Bilgili has been a coauthor on seven scholarly journal publications, of which three were submitted with Hansin as first author. These publications have been featured in a wide range of journals, including a publication in the Journal of Management. He also has a focus on outreach as he is leveraging his research to connect with and help Kansas-based organizations. Dr. Bilgili is strategic in his research choices as he is focusing not only on exploring interesting and relevant topics, but also topics that affect the CBA's strategic goal of impacting economic development through scholarly research and outreach. Furthermore, his research productivity appears likely to continue in full strength given his well-developed research domains and continued work on multiple projects. Given these factors, the committee whole-heartedly recommends Assistant Professor Hansin Bilgili for the outstanding research award."
Laura Rook, program manager in the Student Success Center, is the recipient of the Professional Staff Excellence Award. "Ms. Rook fills her role as the program manager and instructor for the Career Accelerator course with passion and creativity. In looking at the work that she has done, she clearly goes above and beyond the scope of her job to ensure the success of the students with which she works. Her teaching methods in GENBA 205 are seen as innovative, engaging, and relevant for the students that take her course. In addition to preparing the numerous activities she utilizes in the course, she also created a comprehensive educational resource in the form of a 100+ page textbook to be used in the Career Accelerator course. All of the many recommendations that she received for the award highlight her willingness to rise well above expectations in the work that she is doing. For these reasons, we feel that Laura Rook is incredibly deserving of receiving the Staff Excellence Award."
"I fully endorse the committee's recommendations," Gwinner said. "I extend my gratitude to the College of Business faculty, staff, and students who actively took part in the fall faculty and staff awards nomination process. The committee consistently faces challenging decisions given the exceptional pool of highly qualified nominees. A particular acknowledgment is due to the Awards and Recognition Committee for their dedicated service in the award selection process: Committee Chair Kyle Bradley; Shuang Zhu; Kim Charland; Kellie Jackson; and Cara Richardson."
