Professional development event today: 'Supporting Student Workers'
Submitted by Ashley A. Schiffer
Melissa Glaser, engagement coordinator for the Office of Recruitment and Admissions, will present "Supporting Student Workers: Small Shifts that Make Large Impacts on College Success" from noon to 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 28, via Zoom. The presentation is part of the Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series.
Presentation abstract: College is expensive, and we know that many of our students dedicate significant time outside of class to working, which decreases the time available for academics. How can we support these students without lowering our academic standards? In this presentation, Glaser will offer specific, practical ideas from experiences as a supervisor and as an instructor, and also will share perspectives from current student workers on what has helped them most — and what to avoid. Glaser will offer a few tips for those who supervise student workers directly. The good news is that even small changes can make a significant difference in our students' ability to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Better still, these changes benefit all students whose schedules are extra-full, and they improve our experiences as educators, too.
