Kansas State University Service Learning Institute Sept. 26-27
The inaugural Kansas State University Service Learning Institute is hosted by the office of the vice provost for undergraduate studies in partnership with the School of Leadership Studies and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
The Service Learning Institute will be from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.
Patti Clayton will be the convener, host and keynote speaker. Clayton is a senior scholar with the Center for Service and Learning at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. She is well known in the scholarship of service learning and civic engagement and currently serves as an editor for the university's series on service learning research and an associate editor with the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. She has facilitated more than 100 conference sessions and has extensive experience as a practitioner-scholar in community-engaged teaching and learning, including teaching with service learning in a variety of fields. Her work focuses on building the capacity of individuals, units, institutions and the field as a whole for scholarly community-engaged teaching and learning. You can learn more about Clayton’s work by visiting her website.
The institute will be highly interactive. Faculty who attend will be asked to use the workshop as an opportunity to design and develop high-impact service learning curriculum for use in their spring or fall 2014 courses. The invitation is open to faculty and staff who will be teaching this spring and are interested in integrating service learning into their course.
Space is limited with 30 scholarships made available to faculty by the office of the vice provost for undergraduate studies. Scholarships will be offered on a first come, first served basis and are reserved for faculty who are committed to using a service learning pedagogy in course work they will teach in spring or fall 2014. A small group of students and community partners will also be invited in an effort to introduce a process of truly reciprocal, co-created learning.
More details will be forthcoming. To reserve your space now, please call or email Trisha Gott at tcgott@k-state.edu or 785-532-6504.
