K-State's Black Student Union attended the 47th annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government: "The Great Expressions: Unearthing Our Roots & Owning Our Truths" at Iowa State University from Feb. 29-March 2.
Approximately 30 students from K-State attended the conference.
The conference has resumed to its regular schedule of rotation between universities. In 2023, K-State's Black Student Union hosted the conference on the Manhattan campus. This year, students had the opportunity to attend the conference at a different university.
K-State's Black Student Union and officers won several awards at the 47th annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government. The Black Student Union received the Clarence Wine Award for Most Outstanding Black Student Union in the Big 12 for 2024. The K-State Black Student Union has now won this award 15 times of the last 19 years.
K-State students received awards from the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government. Kimathi "Isaiah" Choma won the Nelson Mandela Award. Janiya Cato was elected as the Chair of the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government. Noah McPherson was elected as Parliamentarian of the Big 12 Council.
"I believe that the student leaders and camaraderie that exists in K-State's Black Student Union is unique and resonates on a regional scale and why they have been selected by the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government for the award for this many years now," said Kevin Santos Flores, director of diversity and multicultural student life.
