Goins delivers jazz guitar concerts to Tallahassee audiences
Submitted by the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
Wayne Goins, university distinguished professor of music, gave back-to-back jazz concerts in Tallahassee, Florida.
His first concert on June 4 was at the Vino Beano Wine and Coffee Bar as he performed as the Wayne Goins East Jazz Trio with drummer Michael Bakan, Florida State University professor of ethnomusicology; and bassist Brian Hall, Florida A&M associate professor of strings and theory. The trio delivered a two-hour set of classic jazz standards to an enthusiastic audience.
Goins then performed on June 5 at B-Sharps Jazz Club in the historic Frenchtown district. This premier venue, owned and operated by civic activist Geri Seay, provided a full house for the jazz quintet led by Goins, who hired top-notch Florida State University faculty professors Bill Peterson on piano and Leon Anderson on drums, as well as Kaleb Thompkins, FSU undergraduate bassist and Jacob Wright, Goins' former K-State jazz student and current FSU jazz graduate student on tenor saxophone. Goins once again delivered a two-hour set which garnered three standing ovations and an encore.
Goins has performed with such greats as legendary guitarist Kenny Burrell, alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, trumpeter Clark Terry, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, organist Jimmy McGriff and many others. Learn more.
