Funding awarded for deferred maintenance proposals

Submitted by Ethan Erickson

K-State has developed its FY25 plan to address deferred maintenance projects totaling $12 million using funds appropriated by the Kansas Legislature and one-to-one matching funds from colleges and units.

The projects will address a wide range of much-needed maintenance and upgrades to aging university facilities, and they will improve core/shared use research space and upgrade fixed equipment and/or systems within university laboratory spaces in alignment with the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan. The projects also support the university's and Kansas Board of Regents' initiatives to improve space and classroom use, eliminate deferred maintenance, align with strategic enrollment management, research and service missions, and address life safety, ADA or code issues.

Of the university's $6 million in matching funds, roughly $4.27 million was allocated to support renovations to Thompson, Kedzie, Fairchild and Willard halls and the Chemistry/Biochemistry Building that would allow departments to relocate from Unger Complex, and $210,000 was allocated to support K-State Salina campus infrastructure. The remaining $1.5 million was combined with $500,000 in one-time matching funds from Next-Gen K-State strategic plan funding to improve conditions in core/shared use research space, with the following nine projects being recommended by the Campus Planning and Development Advisory Committee following the university's call for deferred maintenance project proposals in February.
