K-State Community Cultural Harmony Week is Sept. 15-20
Join fellow K-State students, staff and faculty in building a more equitable and welcoming campus during the 25th annual Community Cultural Harmony Week, Sept. 15-20.
The week's theme is 25 years of doing the right things for the right reasons. The week's events, free unless otherwise noted, include:
Monday, Sept. 16
• "Moments that Made a Difference: Critical Moments in the History of Civil Rights," from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m at the K-State Student Union's Bosco Plaza. Enjoy your lunch while viewing a series of short, historical video clips.
Tuesday, Sept. 17
• Constitution Day. View four Kansas Court of Appeals trials at the K-State Student Union Forum Hall. Sponsored by K-State student life office.
- 9:30 a.m. Romkes v. The University of Kansas
- 10:30 a.m. Manzano v. Kansas Department of Revenue
- 1:30 p.m. Aldrich v. State of Kansas
- 2:30 p.m. State of Kansas v. Richmeier
• Student Diversity Panel will be from noon to 1 p.m. on the Bosco Plaza. Listen to and learn from this diverse group of K-Staters as they share their perspectives regarding the Voting Rights Act. It is moderated by Be Stoney and sponsored by Community Cultural Harmony Week.
• SafeZone Ally Introductory Training from 12:30–2:30 p.m. in Room 227 of the Union. Learn how to provide a safe zone for those affected by homophobia, hateful acts and sexual violence. Registration is required and it is sponsored by K-State Safezone.
• Reginald "Reggie" Robinson, Washburn University professor of law, will present "Supreme Court Reconsiders Voting Rights Act: Broken Law or Broken Promise?” at 7 p.m. in the K-State Alumni Center. Sponsored by the Dorothy Thompson Lecture Series.
Wednesday, Sept. 18
• "Roots of Rhythm: Stories with a lot of Soul!" from noon to 1 p.m. on the Bosco Plaza. Bring your lunch and listen to Richard Pitts of the Manhattan Wonder Workshop as he shares drumming music and stories to illustrate African-American history and culture, and how diverse Americans came together to destroy slavery. Sponsored by Community Cultural Harmony Week.
• Showing and discussion of the film "Two Spirits" from 7-8:45 p.m. at the K-State Student Union's Flint Hills Room. "Two Spirits" interweaves a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at a time when the world wasn't simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders. It is sponsored by LGBT Resource Center.
Thursday, Sept. 19
• Interfaith dialogue, “Big Questions!" noon to 1 p.m. on the Bosco Plaza. Join people of varied religious and spiritual perspectives to explore religious views on peace and acceptance. Moderated by David Jones, pastor at Ecumenical Campus Ministries. Sponsored by the President's Committee on Religion.
• Safe Zone Nonviolent Communication Workshop from 3-5 p.m. in Room 226 at the Union. Learn ways to express yourself more effectively by using skills to deal with demands and blaming, manage your own emotions that may block understanding, minimize the likelihood of defensive reactions in others, make clear requests and receive critical and hostile messages without taking them personally, giving in or losing self-esteem. Registration is required.
Friday, Sept. 20
• Joey Lee Garmin Scholarship and International Peace Award Luncheon is from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Union's West Ballroom. No advance registration is required and the cost is $10.61 a person from the Bluemont Buffet. Take your tray of selections to the West Ballroom where water, tea, coffee and tableware will be provided. Awards begin at 12:30 p.m. Contact the student life office at 532-6432 with questions. You do not have to purchase lunch to view the awards.
