Submitted by Communications and Marketing
Gloria Freeland, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications and director of the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Journalism at K-State's A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, was recognized at the annual meeting of the National Newspaper Association for her work with the "Newspapers and Community-Building Symposium." The symposium celebrated its 20th year at the association's Oct. 1-5 meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
The purpose of the symposium is to bring journalism educators and newspaper owners and publishers together in a forum that encourages discussion about current research that is relevant to community newspapers with less than 50,000 circulation or that are considered niche publications. The symposium is sponsored by Kansas State University’s Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the National Newspaper Association and the National Newspaper Association Foundation.
Freeland has coordinated and moderated the symposium for most of the last 20 years. She received an National Newspaper Association paperweight from 2014 association president Robert M. Williams, chairman and publisher of Pierce County Publishing Co. Inc. in Blackshear, Georgia, and Elizabeth Parker, the association's foundation chair and co-publisher and executive editor of the New Jersey Hills Media Group in Bernardsville, New Jersey.
