K-State history professor publishes new book on World War I
David Stone, Pickett professor of history, has published "The Russian Army in the Great War: The Eastern Front, 1914-1917."
"The First World War is the real formative event of the 20th century, but it's far less known that it deserves to be," Stone said, "And the Eastern Front — Russia's war against Germany, Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Turkey — is an unknown facet of a poorly understood war."
Pulling together original research and Russian-language scholarship otherwise inaccessible to an American audience, Stone's book puts the successes and failures of the Russian war effort into comparative perspective.
"The draining effects of the war drove Russia into revolution," Stone said, "but all the empires of central and eastern Europe collapsed under the strain of World War I."
