Vietnamese Lunar New Year 2016 celebration

Submitted by Jackie Huynh

A brief background on Tet Nguyen Dan:

Tet Nguyen Dan, or Tet, is celebrated during late January or February, depending on the lunar calendar. This year, Tet was celebrated from Feb. 7-12. The reason why the Vietnamese Student Association is celebrating Tet late is because Tet is a time for families to spend time with each other. It is a time for families to express their respect and remembrance to their ancestors as well as welcoming the new year with family.

The event will be from 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, in the K-State Student Union's Grand Ballroom. Snacks will be provided while supplies last. The association will put on a traditional dance with fans and non la — a palm-leaf conical hat. St. Anthony's Lion and Dragon Dance team, from Wichita, will have a special performance during the event.

We also will have traditional games/activities like bau cua ca cop, Vietnamese lotto, pin the tail on the monkey and more. There will be door prizes and other prizes handed out during the event.

For those who are looking for volunteer hours, we are currently looking for volunteers to help with the event. This event will count toward volunteer hours for those who need it for their curriculum.
