Register to vote: A how-to guide for students
The Department of Housing and Dining Services encourages students to make their voice heard by registering to vote, and by voting in the upcoming election.
To register to vote in Kansas, you must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state of Kansas, reach the age of 18 by the next election, and if convicted of a felony, you should have received final discharge from imprisonment, parole or conditional release.
To participate in the election, you should be registered to vote at least 21 days prior election day.
• Kansas residents registering in Manhattan:
If a student is a Kansas citizen, housing and dining services encourages registration using Manhattan as their home address, because residence is typically at least nine months of the year.
• Kansas residents registering in another Kansas county:
Students choosing to register to vote in another Kansas county must request an advance ballot from that county, or report to that polling site on election day.
• Out-of-state residents registering in their home state:
Each state has registration deadlines that must be met in order to be eligible to vote. Most states require voters to be registered no later than 15 days prior to the election in which the voter wishes to participate.
Oct. 16 is the deadline to register in time for the election on Nov. 6.
