Seeking students to apply for the Udall scholarship

Submitted by Kali Poenitske

The Udall Foundation was established to honor the commitment of Morris and Stewart Udall to Native American self-governance, health care and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources throughout their long careers in public service. The Udall scholarship seeks to recognize this legacy by awarding $7,000 undergraduate scholarships in two distinct areas.

  1. Students committed to positive change in regard to environmental issues.
  2. Native American/Alaska Native students committed to making a difference for Native American communities, especially in relation to tribal public policy and health care.

U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents with plans to graduate between May 2023 and May 2024 are eligible to apply, and students applying in the Native American/Native Alaskan category must also possess tribal affiliation. Relevant leadership, volunteer or professional experience and/or activism is particularly sought in competitive candidates.

Campus applications are due on Nov. 29, and K-State can nominate up to four students to compete nationally in each area. Students can download the campus application.

Support from mentors is often vital as students consider whether they should apply. If you know of students who seem like a strong fit for this opportunity, please encourage them to apply and/or to speak to Jim Hohenbary, the Udall faculty representative for Kansas State University. Contact him at jimlth@k-state.edu or 785-532-3422.
