Submitted by Division of Communications and Marketing
Chibuzor Mirain Azubuike, a doctoral candidate in leadership communications, is the recipient of an International Doctoral Degree Fellowship from the American Association of University Women, or AAUW.
AAUW awards the fellowship to women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career. Recipients are also selected based on academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to women and girls.
Azubuike is the author of "The Girl Who Found Water" and a children's book, "My Birthmark, My Gift." She is the founder of the Haske Water Aid and Empowerment Foundation. Her research focus is on the resilience of Indigenous women, and she is advised by Andrew Wefald, associate professor of leadership.
"Chibuzor is an amazing person and scholar," Wefald said. "Through her nonprofit she has provided clean water for over 60,000 Nigerians and has provided grants to several young people to embark on water projects. Chibuzor has won numerous grants and fellowships in addition to the AAUW Fellowship. This award reflects her academic excellence."
AAUW is one of the world's oldest leading supporters of graduate women's education. Since 1888, it has awarded more than $135 million in fellowships, grants and awards to 13,000 women from 150 countries. For the 2022–23 academic year, AAUW has awarded an unprecedented $6 million through its fellowships and grants programs to 320 scholars and community projects that promote education and equity for women and girls.
Graduate students whose goals align with the AAUW are invited to contact the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships regarding upcoming opportunities.
