Good
evening [morning, afternoon], my name is _____________. I would
like to have 90 seconds of your time to introduce a foundation
principle for parenting titled, "Being a Parent is For
Life." |
22sec |
How many of you are parents? [3
second pause] Notice I said "are" not
"were." Once you are a parent, you are a parent
for the rest of your life, no matter if separated by distance
or even by death. Having a child is like becoming a sort of
emotional magnet.
Consider this statement: "Even if they never knew their
parents, children will feel drawn to those responsible for
bringing them into the world." Do you agree or disagree?
|
15 sec |
Take a few moments to discuss this issue with
the person next to you. |
32 sec |
Take a moment to consider this question: "Do
your responsibilities stop when your children leave home?"
[10-second pause] If we
helped prepare our children for independence, our responsibilities
change emotionally and legally. When our children reach 21 years
of age, we give them the responsibility for taking care of themselves.
Yet we remain available as supporters and counselors whenever
needed. |
10 sec |
[Describe an example
of this from your own life, either as a parent or as a child] |
2 sec |
Thank you for your time and attention. |

[Make the handout for
Principle 1 available for listeners to take later] |
